The Incubator@SMU is a dedicated workspace that exists to encourage and facilitate the formation and growth of new organizations. The space provides a collaborative environment ideal for interaction with customers, mentors and entrepreneurs.

Whether for profit or not-for-profit, technology-based, products or services, all types of entrepreneurial enterprises are welcome.

CARUTH INSTITUTE OF
ENTREPRENEURSHIP AT COX

Focuses on helping students develop the knowledge to start businesses through short courses and programs, and also oers those interested in career in investment banking/venture capital the opportunity to study and invest in businesses born at Cox. The institute provides students insights and connections through the programs and events such as Dallas 100 Awards and Southwest Venture Forum where budding entrepreneurs get facetime with potential investors. Emphasizes merging art with entrepreneurship so
participants can create a sustainable income source and drive their own careers throughout their lives. Program is offered as a minor and is mostly in the form of experiential learning where participants learn about business and how to monetize their art for their own benefit and of the community. Runs a ‘Small Business Clinic’ and ‘Trademark Clinic’ to help entrepreneurs navigate the legal work necessary to register their business and protect their IP in the initial stages of their business.

The SMU Incubator is exclusively for SMU students, faculty and staff who are serious about starting and growing entrepreneurial enterprises.

The SMU Incubator is a short walk from the SMU main campus across Central Expressway, conveniently located in SMU Expressway Tower: 6116 North Central Expressway, Suite 700.

The SMU Incubator is a brightly lit, co-working environment conducive to ideation, business team building, and collaboration for early stage start-ups. It contains a large group space, break-out spaces, and a co-working area. Additional highlights include:

  • Presentation spaces for workshops, pitching practice, guest speakers, panel discussions, one-on-one consulting, meetings, presentations, and other educational and mentoring purposes;
  • Room for networking sessions and special events;
  • Moveable and stationary whiteboard write-on walls for brainstorming, planning and collaborating;
  • Moveable and removable furniture so that the space can be configured in a host of ways; and
  • Charging stations and free Wi-Fi.
  • A/V Resources for presentations.
  • Kitchen gathering space with plenty of space for caterers or members to store their own kitchen supplies and food.

Workroom that is both copy central, and an informal ideation and meeting area.

SMU Expressway Tower is a secured building open for business Monday through Friday and weekends. Primary investigators for teams, sta and faculty supporting entrepreneurship activities at SMU, Big iDeas sta, and students and sta from MADI will have card swipe access.

Accepted applicants will be charged a fee of $25 to use the SMU Incubator.

There are a number of benefits to becoming a SMU Incubator member. SMU has committed to providing budding and seasoned entrepreneurs office space and support for ideation, start-ups and other entrepreneurial endeavors.

SMU Incubator members have a furnished, professional environment to:

  • Office, with an established address to conduct business;
  • Develop a professional working relationship with team members and build the “right” team;
  • Host company meetings to meet with potential customers, collaborators, and vendors;
  • Interact with mentors, advisors, consultants and other entrepreneurs;
  • Pitch concepts to investors, donors, and other stakeholders;
  • Engage with other entrepreneurially-minded SMU students, faculty and staff;
  • Grow a professional network;
  • Host group training sessions that address specific or broad-based issues; and
  • Hold special events related to business interests.
